Queensland's electrical industry has entered a new regulatory period following the commencement of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2026 on 1 September 2026.
The updated regulation replaces the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 and forms an important part of Queensland's electrical safety framework.
The regulation has been restructured to make its requirements easier to understand, locate and apply. Importantly, the Queensland Government has confirmed that the updated regulation does not introduce new general policy or regulatory obligations.
What has changed?
- Requirements relating to working near overhead and underground electrical lines have been reorganised.
- Definitions and requirements for Qualified Technical Persons (QTPs) and Qualified Business Persons (QBPs) have been consolidated within the licensing provisions.
- Existing electrical licences remain valid, with no requirement to reapply simply because of the new regulation.
- Electrical contractors should review documentation, procedures and legislative references to ensure they refer to the correct provisions.
What does this mean for Queensland electricians?
Electricians and electrical contractors should familiarise themselves with the updated regulation, particularly where it relates to their day-to-day electrical work, safety responsibilities and licensing obligations.
